ICMEC Training
Last Monday and Tuesday, Laura and I attended the compulsory Child Protection training by ICMEC, which was a deep dive into child protection in international school settings. We will plan some PD sessions to explore various scenarios and best practices to keep us up-to-date with the latest child protection practices.
One of the key components of the training was the emphasis on Bridging the Cultural Divide. This segment highlighted the importance of effective communication and understanding in our day-to-day conversations with parents. By actively listening and learning, we can foster stronger relationships and create a more inclusive environment for everyone.
I found this cultural piece particularly interesting and relatable, as we often encounter cultural differences when discussing behaviour management, sleeping or eating habits, and academics (phonics) with parents. Here are some essential practices to keep in mind:
- Listen and Learn: It's crucial that we take the time to understand different perspectives and cultural backgrounds.
- Show Respect and Curiosity: Approach conversations with an open mind and a genuine interest in learning from others.
- Demonstrate an Open Attitude: Be willing to engage with diverse viewpoints and experiences.
- Reflect on Your Own Biases: Acknowledge any preconceptions you may have and strive to set them aside.
- Explain Your Belief/Practice/Position: Share your thoughts clearly while being receptive to alternatives.
- Find Common Ground: Look for shared values and interests that can help bridge any cultural gaps.
Class Parents
We've recruited one or two volunteers per class and are still waiting to hear back from two classes.
Laura and I will meet with these parents on Friday, 15 November, to go through our expectations and answer any questions they might have about the role.
We appreciate that our parents are very busy so that we will only be asking for a little of their time. For example, we hope they can help send out event reminders, e.g., dress-up or picnic days. We will be providing them with some basic info like screenshots to "how-to access the reports." This additional avenue of communication will be helpful. It would be a bonus if they could encourage play dates or gatherings outside of school events.
Accident/ Incident Forms
Filling in an incident form can be crucial for effective reporting and response.
We've created this cheat sheet to support writing the incident details.
REMEMBER: It is an expectation to fill in a form when:
- If the injured child needs emergency medical care - e.g. Calling an ambulance.
- If the injured child requires immediate follow-up medical care e.g. Parents called to collect the child and are recommended to go to A&E/ GP/ Outpatients.
- Any head or face bumps/injuries. Please also take a picture of the bump and upload it onto Gateway, as these bumps can develop over time.
- Inform parents as soon as possible
- If unsure, please check with SLT before calling parents. SLT can always help in completing the accident form and communicating with the parents.
- Always call the parents before the child gets home, especially for any face or head bump/ injury.
Upcoming Dates
Please check our internal calendar below. We might forget to remind everyone of odd dates. We will continue to add events as soon as they're confirmed.
Here's the full 2024/25 Calendar.
